Why a Multi-Disciplinary Approach Matters for Developmental Milestones

When we talk about developmental milestones—rolling, crawling, walking, first words, self-feeding—it’s easy to focus on them individually. But the truth is, no milestone happens in isolation. Every skill a child develops is interconnected, influenced by multiple areas of growth. That's where our concept of: Beyond Milestones: How a Multi-Disciplinary Approach Unlocks Your Child’s Full Potential comes in. At NewDay Child Coaching, we believe in taking a multi-disciplinary approach when discussing and teaching developmental milestones. By looking at development through the lens of multiple professionals—speech-language pathologists (SLPs), occupational therapists (OTs), and physical therapists (PTs)—we can better understand how each skill supports the next and why a whole-child perspective is essential.

The Interconnected Nature of Milestones

Each milestone builds on the skills that came before it.

Take crawling, for example. Many parents think of it as just a motor milestone, but it’s so much more! Crawling strengthens core muscles, develops hand-eye coordination, and even plays a role in speech and language by promoting tongue and jaw stability. A PT will focus on the gross motor mechanics of crawling, an OT will consider how it influences sensory processing and fine motor development, and an SLP will examine how it supports oral motor skills for feeding and speech.

Similarly, self-feeding isn’t just about getting food into a child’s mouth. It requires postural control (PT), fine motor coordination and sensory processing (OT), and oral motor strength and coordination (SLP). Without this multi-disciplinary perspective, it’s easy to miss underlying factors that may be making a skill more challenging for a child.

Beyond Milestones: How a Multi-Disciplinary Approach Unlocks Your Child’s Full Potential--Why Parents Benefit from a Multi-Disciplinary Approach

When parents learn from professionals with different expertise, they gain a more complete understanding of their child’s development. Instead of feeling stuck when a milestone isn’t progressing, they can ask the right questions and implement strategies that address multiple areas at once.

For example, a child struggling with speech delays might also have difficulty with postural stability, making it harder to sit upright and use their core muscles effectively to produce phonation. Understanding this connection helps parents seek out solutions that address the root of the issue rather than just the symptom.

Empowering Parents Through Knowledge

At NewDay Child Coaching, we are a team of three pediatric specialists: a PT, an OT, and an SLP. Together, we bring our expertise to help parents understand not just what milestones to look for, but why they matter and how to support them in a way that respects the whole child.

Our approach is built on empowerment, education, and inclusivity. Every child’s development is unique, and our goal is to equip parents with the knowledge they need to feel confident in supporting their child’s journey.
