The Easiest Way to Enjoy Book Time with Your Young Child

Updated: 6 days ago

The Easiest Way to Enjoy Book Time with Your Young Child--Is your little one flipping through book pages at lightning speed, barely pausing to glance at the pictures? Or maybe they leave the space entirely when you start reading the words? If so, don’t worry—you’re not alone! This likely means the activity isn’t engaging enough for your child just yet, possibly because it’s too language-heavy without enough action.

Dad and daughter enjoy book time together. Daughter points to pictures that dad is naming.

So, what can you do? Be quick! As your child rapidly flips through a page, jump in and point to something simple—"Cat!" "Nose!" "Tree!" See if this helps them slow down to pay attention to what you’re naming or pointing to. Not only does this strategy build vocabulary, but it also models how we use our index finger to focus on objects—a foundational skill for learning and communication.

If your child still turns pages too fast to engage, try introducing a "touch and feel" book. As they explore different textures, name what they feel—"Soft!" "Bumpy!" "Scratchy!" "Pokey!" This provides them with a rich sensory experience while also expanding their vocabulary.

With the added stimulation of touch, your child may be more interested in slowing down to interact with each page alongside you!

What do you think? Have you tried either of these strategies? Have they helped improve book time with your child?
