Lead with Fun

Picture this: A mom standing in the living room, catching a whiff that only a parent can recognize from across the room. With a calm voice and a confident hand sign, she says, “Time for a diaper change!” Her toddler catches sight of her and zooms—straight out of the room and behind the window blinds.

She finds him there, quiet but clearly saying with his body: No thanks, Mom.

The mom later told us, “It’s not the diaper change itself he hates. Once he’s lying down, he’s totally fine. It’s getting him to come over and lie down that’s the problem.”

Sound familiar?

I invited Mom to pause. To get curious instead of frustrated. What was he running from? Was it the task—or the tone? The energy? The predictability?

Then we tried something different. We made it fun.

I started singing a silly song in an even sillier voice. Think opera-singer-meets-goofy-goose. Not because I’m auditioning for a musical—because toddlers love novelty, connection, and play.

Mom smiled. Then she joined in.In her own playful voice, she called out:“Come get some biiiiig squeezes before your diaper change!”

And guess what? Her son peeked out from behind the blinds… and ran into her open arms.No bribes. No power struggles.Just a happy toddler getting a hug and then a diaper change.

So what happened?

Something powerful:✨ When we make something fun for us, it becomes fun—or at least tolerable—for our child, too.

Our kids are always watching us. Feeling us. Mirroring us. If we come at them with tension, they tense up too. If we come at them with playfulness, they’re more likely to join in.

This isn’t about being a 24/7 entertainer. It’s about shifting the energy. Finding the silly. Leading with fun. Leading with joy.

What if…

  • You turn toothbrushing into a lion-taming adventure?

  • You race to the car like you’re in the Olympics?

  • You narrate cleanup time like a dramatic sports commentator?

Toddlers don’t want to be controlled. But they do want to connect. And connection is often easier to create through fun than through force.
