Your Child Is Growing — Now What? Introducing PathWise™ Level 1: Watch AND Support Child Development

How to Watch AND Support Child Development: PathWise™ Level 1

Every child is on a journey.

And as a parent, you are the most important person on that journey with them. You notice things no one else does. You know your child's rhythms, quirks, and patterns before anyone else names them. You are, in the truest sense, the expert observer of your own child.

That's the foundation of the PathWise™ Watch AND Support™ framework — a revolutionary framework created by Rachel Lynn May, CCC-SLP, Founder of NewDay Child Coaching and the Speech-Language Pathologist on our multidisciplinary team. Rachel developed PathWise™ to help families move beyond binary "typical vs. delayed" thinking and understand where their child truly is on the developmental continuum — and what kind of support makes sense right now.

PathWise™ looks at child development through three lenses: Typical, Delayed, and Different. Within each of those lenses, there are three levels of support. This post is all about Level 1 — Watch AND Support™ 🟢.

This is the level of awareness, celebration, and intentional presence. The PathWise™ approach to how you watch AND support child development is not "wait and see" — it's active, joyful, and informed.

Let's talk about what that looks like across all three developmental paths.

Typical Development + Watch AND Support™ 🟢: Time to Celebrate

If your child is reaching their developmental milestones on time — congratulations. Genuinely. That is worth celebrating.

In a world that is quick to focus on what might be going wrong, we want to pause here and say: your child is doing beautifully, and so are you.

But Watch AND Support™ doesn't stop at "everything looks great." Because development isn't a destination — it's a moving, living process. The Watch AND Support Child Development level for a typically developing child means staying present, staying curious, and continuing to actively nurture the progress your child is already making.

Children thrive when their caregivers are engaged observers. When you narrate their play, respond to their cues, follow their lead, and celebrate their efforts — you're not just enjoying parenthood. You're actively participating in their development. That consistent, attuned support is what helps milestones not just arrive on time, but build meaningfully on each other.

One thing to keep in mind: even children who are developing right on track can be temporarily shifted by big life events. A move to a new home. A new sibling arriving. A change in family structure. A transition in childcare or school. These kinds of changes can briefly impact development — sometimes leading to a regression or plateau that wasn't there before.

If that happens, it doesn't mean something is permanently wrong. It may simply mean your child has moved from Watch AND Support™ to needing a little more — Level 2, Learn HOW to Support™ 🟡. We'll be exploring exactly what that looks like in our next post.

The goal of Watch AND Support™ is not to worry less — it's to stay informed, stay connected, and stay ready.

Watch AND Support Child Development

Delayed Development + Watch AND Support™ 🟢: Progress Is Still Progress

Here's something we want every family to hear clearly: being behind doesn't mean being broken.

For a child in the delayed developmental pathway, Watch AND Support Child Development means that your child is moving a bit more slowly than their peers in reaching certain milestones — but they are moving. They are following the same general path of development. The sequence is there, just at a different pace.

This matters more than it might seem. A child who is getting there — even more slowly — is a child whose development is progressing. And your support as a caregiver is actively contributing to that progress every single day.

Watch AND Support™ for a child in the delayed pathway means:

  • Staying close to their current developmental level. Meet your child where they are, not where you think they "should" be. Play at the edge of what they can do — dancing from just slightly above, to just slightly below — so that you're gently stretching their capacity without overwhelming them.

  • Watching the gap. One of the most important things families of children in the delayed pathway can do is track whether the gap between their child and their peers is staying stable, narrowing, or growing. A gap that stays consistent or shrinks over time is encouraging. A gap that continues to widen is information — and a signal that it may be time to move toward Level 2, Learn HOW to Support™ 🟡.

  • Celebrating every step. Forward is forward. A child who was not yet using words and now uses one — that is a milestone worth marking. Don't let the comparison to peers steal the celebration from your child's real and meaningful growth.

Development is not a race. But it is a direction. And Watch AND Support™ means keeping a warm, informed eye on that direction together.

Different Development + Watch AND Support™ 🟢: Following Their Own Path

Some children develop in ways that don't fit neatly into "on track" or "behind." Their development may be uneven, unexpected, or simply wired differently — and yet they are growing, learning, and finding their own way.

This is the Different pathway in PathWise™, and Watch AND Support™ in this space looks beautifully, uniquely personal.

You might notice your child beginning to communicate through phrases they've heard in a song, or repeating lines from a favorite book to get their needs met — using language in their own way, on their own terms. You might notice they love to rock, spin, hang upside down, or seek out intense sensory experiences that other children don't seem to need. None of these things, on their own, are cause for alarm. For some children, these are simply the ways their nervous system makes sense of the world — and while they're doing it, they're still making progress. Still meeting milestones, perhaps in their own order, their own timing, their own way.

Watch AND Support™ for a child in the different pathway means:

  • Leaning into curiosity, not fear. Differences in how a child develops are not automatically deficits. An informed observer notices patterns without immediately pathologizing them.

  • Watching with your child, not just for problems. Understanding what your child's patterns communicate — what they need, what fuels them, what their nervous system is asking for — is the beginning of truly informed support.

  • Knowing your own needs too. This is the part families don't always hear: this level depends on your child's needs and your needs as a caregiver. Some families feel steady and informed in the Watch AND Support™ space. Others feel uncertain, overwhelmed, or like they need more guidance — and that's just as valid. There is no wrong answer here.

It's also worth noting that the Different pathway within Watch AND Support™ is one of the most fluid in the entire PathWise™ framework. Depending on how your child's development unfolds — and what your family needs to feel supported and confident — this level may move naturally toward Level 2, Learn HOW to Support™ 🟡, or it may call for Level 3, Advocate for Support™ 🩷. Neither of those is a step backward. They're simply the next right step for your family.

How to Watch AND Support Child Development — It's Not "Wait and See"

We want to be very clear about something, because it matters.

Watch AND Support™ is not passive. It is not "wait and see." It is not "he'll catch up" or "she'll grow out of it" offered in place of real information.

Watch means actively observing your child with an informed, attuned eye. Noticing patterns. Tracking progress. Staying present.

Support means doing something with what you observe. Celebrating wins. Meeting your child where they are. Creating environments and experiences that actively nourish their development. And when the moment calls for it — seeking more.

At NewDay Child Coaching, we built the PathWise™ framework because we believe parents deserve more than vague reassurance. You deserve a framework that helps you understand what you're seeing — and feel confident about what to do next.

What Comes Next?

If you're reading this and your child feels solidly in Watch AND Support™ 🟢 territory — wonderful. Keep going. Keep celebrating. Keep watching and supporting with intention.

And if something has shifted — if you're noticing a regression, a plateau, a growing gap, or a pattern that's making you curious — our next post is for you.
